Many years ago, I heard a pastor say, “If it were not for the people, I would love the ministry.” After my initial shock, I responded, “People are our ministry.”
Maybe we should remember what Jesus said in John 3:16, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have everlasting life.” If people matter that much to God, they should matter to us.
A few thoughts on working and serving people:
1. You have to love yourself before you can love others.
When you don’t love yourself, you don’t treat yourself well. When you don’t treat yourself well, you typically don’t treat others well.
2. Do not drive people away.
Three things that drive people away:
-Demonstrating a controlling spirit
-Demonstrating a critical spirit
-Demonstrating a temperamental spirit (moody).
3. Draw people toward you.
Develop and express a sense of self-confidence
-Be real, be yourself
-Live with passion
-Demonstrate a sense of purpose in life.
4. Treat others as you want to be treated.
“Do unto others as you would have them do to you.” Luke 6:31
5. Listen from the heart.
Be present, ask good questions, show empathy, and pray as you listen.
Ask God to give you His eyes when you see people. Ephesians 1:18 says people are “His inheritance.” Look at each person as a special gift; someone who deeply matters to God.
